Basics

As detailed in the Shinki 101, using a spell requires the target's name, spoken aloud so the target can hear it, and a mindset of complete superiority over them. Spells can be countered by using a borderline cast with the intent of deflecting the spell.

Using a song does not require a name, but a song takes a more indirect effect on the target. It also requires some degree of musical proficiency. Songs can be undone only through singing the counter-song.

Shinki characters can learn spells and songs through relations with other characters (CR), as well as through limited access to spell books from the library in heaven. Although things are improving through the character's efforts in-game, the Far Shore's library is still a mess, so the chance of finding a book of spells is random.
Comment on the Locations page if your character is looking for a book, and the mods will reply to you with what they might find.

It will take shinki at least one in-game month (2 OOC months) to learn a spell or song, either from the books or from another shinki. During the one IC month where the shinki is learning the spell, we would basically like to see the characters go through a reasonable process of learning a spell before using it. Therefore we encourage players to have this be a part of their character's CR. For example, sharing a spell book with another character, discussing the frustrations of trying to learn the spell, or celebrating the success when it finally works.

As far as learning from the books, think of it as you've been given some mechanical parts and an instruction manual, and are told you can make a car run with this. It's very difficult to figure something like that out without more help than the manual can give, or a lot of practice. And the more complicated the machine, the harder it is.
After a lot of time, practice, and trial-and-error you'd be able to make it work.

As a benchmark from Noragami canon, Yukine had a mentor to learn from, and it took him a month of diligent study (as in, he had literally nothing else to do but study) to learn a few common spells and one song.

We require that all characters, no matter their natural abilities, take the same time to learn the spell. There is no benchmark we can use across all player character’s canons to evaluate 'genius ability', so the fairest thing is to make everyone the same. Everyone is new to the shinki thing, after all.

Experience points, learning spells and spell strength

The spells will have an exp minimum to be able to start learning from a certain tier. You must have at least that many Total points (the points your character has earned over the course of the game) for your character to learn a spell in that tier.

The spell will also have an exp cost, similar to a regain. The exp points for a spell will be deducted from the character's Available points account at the time of applying for the spell. After the two ooc months are finished the character will be able to use the spell.

For example, my character wants to learn the dizziness spell. It is a tier 2 spell, and I have been in the game long enough that I have over 500 total points. The spell will cost 500 exp points. I have over 500 Available points now, because I haven't spent them on anything yet. Once I fill out the application for the spell the mods will reply to it and tell me the OOC date that my character will have finished learning the spell. 500 points will be taken from my Available points account.

On or after that ooc date my character will have learnt the spell and will be able to use it.

Once learnt, casting a spell does not cost exp.

Going forward from June 5, 2018, learning spells will be through this system. We will not retroactively charge exp for spells that were learnt before before this tier system.

As detailed in the Shinki 101, a spell's strength has more to do with a shinki's state of mind than their overall experience. However, for the game, experience points are useful for giving an idea of what the shinki can potentially do.

A shinki with a high overall experience total will find that they can increase the strength or duration of their spell. The more they IC-ly practice the spell, the more chance they have of finding the upper limits of their ability. We ask players to play out these details reasonably, and that the caster and the target communicate with each other about the spell's effects. If there is any question or concern over how a spell should be or was played out, we welcome you to contact the mods.

Following is a list of available spells, as well as the OOC requirements for them. The time listed is the maximum of how long the spell can last up until without the caster releasing the spell. Initially, shinki won't be able to make the spell take the maximum effect, but through experience they can reach the full potential of the spell.

The spells made for the game have had Japanese names added for flavour. Players are welcome to use the Japanese word, or continue using the English.

Tier 1

Shinki need to have gained 30 Total experience points (points earned in the game overall) to start learning these spells. It will cost 30 Available experience points (exp points available to use) to learn one spell.

Learnt from books or through CR:
  • Jyou (縄) Spell of 'Bind': Binds a person in place so they cannot move. The target can still speak. Lasts up to 10 minutes.
  • Fuurou (封蝋) Spell of 'Silence': Renders a person unable to speak. Lasts up to 10 minutes.
  • Sui (睟) Spell of 'Truth': Compels a person to tell only the truth. The target can choose whether or not to speak, but anything they do say will be the truth. Lasts up to 1 minute. (Unlike the canon spell 'resound', it does not force the target to speak when they try to remain silent.)
  • Song of Fire Fighting: A traditional poem sung to quench fires, both natural and supernatural. The lyrics are: "Come, pillars of frost, crossbeams of crystalline ice, and girders of snow. Rafters of the falling rain, and thatch covering of dew."
  • Song to Ward Off Lightning: A traditional poem sung to stifle lightning. The lyrics are: "If thou pray'st to me and yet deem thy faith to be of little value, I have but to part the clouds and return to the heavens."

Canon spells, learnt only through CR:
  • Bakufu (縛布) (binding cloth): Binds the person in place so they cannot move. The target cannot speak. Lasts up to 10 minutes.
  • Inko (official translation) / Umbra (unofficial translation) (陰固) (solid shade): Renders the target invisible to all except the spell caster. Lasts up to 10 minutes.
  • Rakusui (落睡) (sleep fall): Forces the target to fall asleep. Lasts up to an hour, but there is a chance of the target waking up naturally after 10 minutes even without their name being called by the caster. For example, by the target being roughly shaken or splashed with water.

Tier 2

To learn these spells, the shinki must have gained 500 Total experience overall in the game. It will cost 500 experience points to learn one spell.
  • Meku (眊) Spell of 'Blindness': Renders the target unable to see. Lasts up to 15 minutes.
  • Memai (眩) Spell of 'Dizziness': The target becomes dizzy. They will be light-headed and unable to orient themselves, as well as being affected by whatever symptoms the character themselves might normally experience when dizzy (for example, nausea, headache, fatigue). Lasts up to one minute.
  • Zeijyaku (脆弱) Spell of 'Weakness': Renders the target physically weak. Depending on the strength and will of the caster, it can vary in potency from making the target unable to throw a punch at full strength to having the target unable to stand to support their own body weight. Lasts up to 15 minutes.
  • Song of Fire: A traditional poem sung to start a supernatural fire. The flame can grow up to about the size of an outstretched hand. It can be manipulated by the caster in that it can be held, thrown, or set down. Should the caster will it, it can start mundane fires. The lyrics are: "Autumn colors on the mountain lit by the sunset, deep colors and pale ones; A kimono skirt pattern of pine, maple and ivy trees, decorating the mountain's base."
  • Song of Lightning: A traditional poem sung to call down a bolt of lightning from the sky. It will accurately strike wherever the caster wills. The lightning can be cast down multiple times as the song is sung, but only one bolt at a time. The lyrics are: "Oh stormy winds, bring up the clouds, and paint the heavens grey; Lest these fair maids of form divine should angel wings display, and fly far far away."

Tier: Special

Ablution: This is to learn the incantation and the process that goes into an ablution. To learn this, the character must have over 1000 Total experience points, and provide a link proving how the shinki is learning about the ablution IC-ly. In return for these requirements, the ablution incantation does not take two ooc months to learn, and does not cost Available exp. It can be learnt instantly.

Note that three shinki must cast the spell together in order to perform an ablution. All three participating shinki must know the ablution incantation.

The incantation is:
"To safeguard the name, dedicated to [the god's formal name] and have its spirit wiped clean… Cast off thy impurity and extinguish thy carnal mind, thou bright, meek, upright soul. Strip thyself of uncleanness and be thou also pure. Purgatory!"
They then trap the guilty shinki in a triangle-shaped barrier of borderlines, and force the shinki to repent. Further details are in the Shinki 101 page.

Tier: Custom

These are spells that were created in-game by a new shinki character, through the purchase of a Regain. They can be of any Tier, but they cannot be learned via a random book discovery; they have to be learned from the character who created it or someone they taught.
