Prayers
They are everywhere. From those that hide to those that can fly. I've even seen ones that ride on people's shoulders. Big and small, there are all kinds, but they are all the deceased, the residents of the other world. They cannot be seen by people like us who live in this world. Even though they are so close by. The only ones that can see them are animals and children. And those like me who stand on the border of this world and the other world, people of the boundary. They like depressing atmospheres. They call it gloom. If they gather around you, you fall into a whirlpool of depression.' Answering prayers is the most significant way for Gods to gain followers, Shinki to gain experience, and their temple to gain renown in The Far Shore through their teamwork! A "prayer" comes from a human on the Near Shore, Earth, wishing for something to happen. It might be out loud, it might be a hope articulated only in their own mind, or it could even be an entirely subconscious desire. The prayers can be said at a shrine, a school, a small altar at home, the garden, at a lake, on a mountaintop... wherever a human is moved to appeal to the higher powers for advice or help. A god can hear this in many ways: in their mind as soon as the prayer is said, over a phone call, overheard by someone speaking across the street, you name it! Some prefer to see it written down and left at their shrines because they're so very busy that it will take a long time to process them. This variety allows players to choose a method of hearing and answering prayers that is fun, cool, interesting, or challenging to their characters. We want to encourage creativity to match up the kind of God that would hear each prayer - it doesn't even have to be the same from prayer to prayer! A god's followers are NPCs that the mods don't run, so it might vary based on regions the followers live in, how long the god has been in the game, or purely circumstantial based on the prayer itself. There are many kinds of prayers that are simple, everyday requests that don't require a bonded god-shinki pair (meaning the god named the shinki) to answer them, because they don't require defeating an ayakashi with the Rend spell. As long as you can think of a creative reason for why and how a shinki got ahold of their god's prayer - including asking them directly - that god's shinki can answer prayers on their behalf too! Taking along a fellow shinki friend is fine, god-god pairs are fine too, as well as gods and shinki they haven't named. We like this last one especially because it's possible to start a prayer, accidentally find an ayakashi, and then the god might ask to name that shinki in the moment! Fallout from such a situation can be very interesting! We have provided a number of prompts to get you thinking about prayers generally, but they are vague on purpose. You're free to add elements to these prompts, especially where they take place. For example, even though we have chains of related prayer prompts, players are welcome to string them together into interesting narratives that include the same follower NPCs or regions on the Near Shore! Examples:
Prayers run on a Claim system. This means that players can start the thread as soon as they wish, provided that any pre-requisites have been met, and all we need is a link to the finished prayer thread/log in order for the list mods to distribute the prayer rewards. Pre-requisites don't have to be fulfilled by all characters answering the prayer; each pre-requisite only needs to be fulfilled by one character. For example, if a god/shinki pair completed the first prayer in a chain, they could add another character for the second part of the chain. What is a custom prayer?
Even though the mods have provided prompts to generate ideas for players, and players are welcome to add flourishes to these prompts, sometimes the prompts just don't suit the kind of prayer that a god may get called to answer. We encourage players to use our prompts as a guideline for designing their own prayers, especially in terms of the rewards. Players are welcome to write custom chained prayers as well! Submit all of them at once for approval and we'll review them all in advance if you'd like, or you can submit them one at a time. Custom Prayer Description: This should be from the perspective of the human praying for something, or explaining why a chain is continuing. and wait for a mod response before starting your prayer. If the Custom Prayer is approved, you will receive a comment from the list mods. Reply to that mod comment with your completed prayer link when you're finished. Before replying to a Claim comment, a list mod will review the thread to make sure it meets all of the prayer's requirements. If it does, they will reply with a comment that details all of the rewards for the prayer. Followers and experience updates are reflected on the Tag Counts around the same time as the list mod's reply. The "requirements" come in two varieties, IC and OOC, in order for the prayer to be considered answered. IC requirements are what writing elements need to be in the thread, for example: if the prayer is about a lost dog, did you return the dog to the owner, or did the final comment at least imply that's where the characters were heading next? We call this "forward momentum" when a list mod is reviewing the thread. OOC requirements are usually comment counts and refer to the length of the entire thread, not per character. OOC requirements are stricter than IC ones. I can include references to the Monthly Announcement Prompts? Yes! We allude to followers asking for help via prayers and menacing ayakashi in our Monthly Announcements, under the "Happenings" category. If you solve these problems in the threads that you turn in to this page, then we will award you a 10% bonus. Don't worry if you don't get it finished in the same month - as long as it is started within the month holding the Announcement Happening referenced in your prayer, you'll still get the bonus credit. Write-up responses (with or without a Soulless shinki) to Prayers can be made directly to the prayer thread in a comment, or emailed to the mod account with the Prayer number in the subject line.
A maximum of FIVE played characters (so not including soulless shinki) can claim any given prayer, task, or mission. In order to get credit for any prayer, task, or mission they participate in, any one character must have made at least 3 comments to the thread regardless of comment requirements. For example, 5 characters request a prayer only requiring 10 comments. If they turn the prayer in at 10 comments, only some of the characters - the ones that made 3 comments - will get credit for the prayer, so it'd be better to wait until at least 15 comments, or 3 comments per 5 characters. Prayer Prompts A common premise for Noragami prayers is that an ayakashi was involved. For any of the above prayers, we have provided a static Bonus option:
A common way to chain prayers (or tasks/missions) together is by having one top-level per prayer and putting the number of the prayer in the subject line. For example: a log like this. Another way is keep it all going in one long thread, but still using the subject headers to identify when one prayer stops and another begins. In both cases, it helps the list mods read the prayer threads to ensure they met requirements. Most of the Chains below build up to defeating an ayakashi, and thus will require a bonded god-shinki pair, but other characters can still join the chain and get credit for helping out! This can be two shinki from the same god's temple, a bonded god-shinki pair and a second god, two gods with Soulless shinki, etc.! |
